About Us

LSAC was created in 2011 through a merger of the Learning and Study Skills Association and the Learning Specialist Association of British Columbia. In 2015, LSAC was one of the founding members of the International Consortium of Academic Language and Learning Developers along with AALL, ALDinHE, and ATLAANZ in Australia, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand respectively.

Our Principal Purposes

  • provide national and regional leadership on issues relevant to our members
  • promote the professional status of our members
  • develop, encourage, and support sound professional and ethical standards among our members
  • facilitate the networking of our members to share information and hold conferences and other gatherings
  • support the professional development and practice of our members
  • present, publish, and disseminate research and discussion material appropriate to our members
  • serve as a link with other similar organizations internationally

Vice President

Madelyn has served as the Eastern Regional Chair of LSAC (2019-2021) and is currently the Vice-President, LSAC (2021-2023).  Madelyn’s passion for education extends beyond higher education.


Dr. Deena Kara Shaffer


Deena is a nationally recognized learning specialist, keynote speaker, trainer, consultant & coach about all things equitable, sustainable learning & teaching.


Marti Alger


Marti is a motivated and caring learning strategist with over 20 years’ experience serving students across Canada, training fabulous tutors, and teaching students how to learn.


Sandra Smith

Pacific Region Char

Sandra J. Smith, Coordinator of the Academic Success Centre at the University of the Fraser Valley, is serving her second term as the Pacific Region Chair on the LSAC Board of Directors.


Rachel-Taylor Fergusson

Western Region Chair
Rachel is a learning specialist, instructional designer, and advocate of critical thinking. 

Juliet O'Neill Dunphy

Eastern Region Chair
Juliet has been involved in the field of education for more than 40 years as a learning specialist, teacher, and course designer; she has been manager of Concordia University Learning Services since 2010.  

Jaclyn Borden

Atlantic Region Chair

Jaclyn is a learning strategist who is focused on providing holistic and equitable services to all students. 


Dr. Lindsay Heggie

International Relations Director

Lindsay Heggie holds multiple degrees in Linguistics and Education, and has a special interest in the intersection of graduate studies and academic success, coordinating programming to support Master’s and PhD students.
