Description

The most significant part of your role as a learning specialist is one-to-one appointments with students. Two sets of skills are needed: skills of effective engagement during the appointment and the learning strategies themselves. How do you develop skill in each area? How do you measure your growth and development? What theory underpins your practice? How do we support healthy learning strategy engagements?

Dr. Buckland will explore aspects of these questions with the group and cover knowledge acquisition and Cognitive Flexibility Theory as they apply to students and to themselves. Participants will then work through a student scenario together and finally strategize how to apply the principles from the session to their own practice to support healthy learning engagements.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand the two main skill sets needed for learning strategies engagements.
  2. Understand how to apply the principles of knowledge acquisition and Cognitive Flexibility Theory to their student engagements.
  3. Reflect on approaches to learning specialists’ continuous growth and development in the context of a busy schedule.
